Feature: From Seeking Belonging to Creating It

When I think of interpretation it brings me to our second resident volunteer experience and one unforgettable person. Our first try at resident volunteers was at a Florida State Park in Ocala. At that time, we weren’t too involved with the park rangers and their work. We worked mostly on the maintenance side in the shop areas. Interpretation wasn’t really on our radar.

A few years later we came back down to Florida for the winter months. And came across a post looking for some resident volunteers in the Green Swamp of central Florida. We made a call, put in our resume and soon got a call from Val. Little did we know the last FL state park we volunteered at was a connection.

Val welcomed us with a kind heart and was enthusiastic to have some ‘younger’ volunteers on board. Most of the volunteers at the State Parks tend to be retirees living out their best lives! So it was refreshing for both parties.

After training at the Ranger Station I was asked if I wanted to go along on the tram tour. Absolutely, yes! And what a treat it was. I was quickly engulfed in the back story of Colt Creek State park. Val’s interpretation of the park was infectious. He shared the history of the land. He also explained the importance of the water of the Green Swamp and its role to the Florida aquifer. Our curiosities were cued and we were hanging on to every word he was spewing. There were questions and laughs. A welcoming environment of community. All from interpretation.

Later on when I spoke with Val, he asked how he did and if I enjoyed it. I said “Oh yeah. It was great, I loved it and learned so much. Thanks for inviting me!” He chuckled and said, I don’t even remember what I was saying, it all just flowed out of me. And that’s what its all about. Having a passion so strong that it flows through you and out to others. To share the joy, the community and love for all without judgment.
